Celebrated my birthday over the weekend..
It's hard to imagine what a long way we've come since last year..
Just last year I was the same old girl from highschool.
Now suddenly, I'm Ryan's mummy.
I think I've had a pretty great life and I couldn't ask for more..
Sure, my family has it's share of craziness, but they Love Ryan to bits and that's all that matters really.
Z and I, we have our ups and downs, but he is a really great father. I really need to give him more credit for that..
I've also been so blessed to be surrounded by a fantastic group of friends which go way back.. Some since kindergarten even!
Although most are far away, having settled on different continents of the world, we still manage to keep in touch. And knowing they are there keeps me going when the going gets tough.
Birthdays always make me feel so nostalgic. And I get snippets of past events playing in my head like an old home movie..
I remember being in school during primary 2 or 3.. sitting at the well worn desks covered in scribbles and countless holes made by itchy fingered children armed with pens and pencils..
I remember nasi lemak at the canteen and the plastic cup of cold diluted orange cordial.
A particularly embarrassing recital of a poem entitled "my shadow" with my best friend..
Then I'm in secondary school and we are sitting by the long driveway every morning before the school bell rang..
I can still hear the squeals and gasps I heard when I walked up the driveway one day with my long hair cropped to chin length. (I was too embarrassed to tell them my mother had actually chopped off a huge lock coz of something I did and my sister was forced to even it out for me)
Then there was Monday afternoon Koko..
Walking to Petronas/Mamak nearby..
Constantly sneaking in and out of each others' classrooms between classes..
Nasi ayam banjir on Fridays..
Private, top secret conversations in the store room in one of the classes..
Birthday parties and shopping trips.
Sleepovers, day trips and weekend getaways...
I could go on and on..
I hope Ryan will be able to find great friends who add as much colour into his life as my friends have for the past 20 years..
Even though I wish everyday for them to be close to me, so we could share more of our lives together and raise our kids together, I will settle for my little packets of support flying in whenever I need em.

Hi, was searching for a maid via google and came across your blog dated April 2011. Me and my wife are both doctors too and we have 2 daughters, 2.5 and 7 months old. How's your arrangement for your kid now when you are at work? We used to hire a nanny and a maid but my nanny stopped working this month.
ReplyDeleteawwww.....i can't wait to meet ryan later this year!!!
ReplyDeleteHi JC, =)
ReplyDeleteWe have been staying with my parents since confinement.. We initially thought of leaving the baby with our maid, but there have been too many scary stories.. =S So at the moment we are staying with my parents to train our maid and to make sure she's trustworthy (and not psychotic ^_^).. My maid basically does most of the stuff.. she's really good with the baby actually, so we are lucky.. my mother helps to supervise.. We plan to move out once Ryan is slightly older.
Hiring a local nanny And a maid would be so costly.. I suppose if I didn't have the help of my parents, I might consider Daycare.. But with 2 kids I imagine that is going to be pretty costly too and slightly difficult when u r both oncall..
I guess we are lucky to have our parents around and they r willing to help us out.. Hope you manage to work something out!
Steph,
ReplyDeleteRyan can't wait to meet his godmum! =))
